Five Hour Stew

  • 1 1/2 lbs. stew meat, cut in chunks
  • 4 or 5 medium potatoes, cut in chunks
  • 6 medium carrots, cut in large chunks
  • 4 to 6 medium onions, diced
  • 1/2 tsp. basil
  • 1 tblsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 to 2 tsp. salt
  • 3 tblsp. tapioca
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 8 oz. tomato juice
Place meat and vegetables in heavy pan or roaster. Mix seasonings,tapioca, water, tomato juice, and bouquet together. Pour over meat.Put lid on, bake 4 1/2 to 5 hrs. at 250F. Stir occasionally.


Cherry Pie Cobbler

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
Melt butter in baking dish. Combine sugar, flour, and milk.Beat until smooth. Pour over melted butter in baking dish.Add fruit. Do not stir. Bake at 400F. for 30 minutesuntil brown.

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water (105F).
  • 2 tblsp. sunflower oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup wheat germ
  • 1/4 cup rye flour
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • Cornmeal
  • 1 egg white

Sprinkle yeast in warm water. Stir to dissolve. In a largebowl, mix sunflower oil, egg, cottage cheese, honey, and salt. Adddissolved yeast and 2 cups bread flour, beating until flour is moistened.Gradually stir in whole wheat flour, wheat germ, rye flour, and oats,plus enough bread flour to make a soft dough.

On a floured surface, knead dough about 10 minutes or until doughis smooth and elastic. Place dough in greased bowl, coverloosely with oiled plastic wrap. Let rise in warm place until doubledin size, about 30 minutes. Punch down dough. Shape into oneround loaf. Place in a greased glass pie pan sprinkled with cornmeal.Cover with oiled plastic wrap and let rise until doubled in size,about 1 hour.

Brush with egg white and sprinkle with wheat germ. Bakeat 350F. for 30 minutes. If too dark, cover loosely with foil thelast 10-15 minutes of baking. Remove from pie pan and coolon a wire rack. Yield: 1 loaf (2 lbs.)
